Getting here

Carpet Museum is located on a beside Lale Bustan, Fatemi and Karegar junction . It is easily reached by public transportation or by automobile.

Carpet Museum is accessible to all.

•  A Coat Check Station is located at the corner of Ground Level (free).
•  First Aid is located on the First Level in Security Services on the north side, or ask any Museum representative for assistance.
• Gift Store is located on the First Level.
•  Information Desks are located on the First Level entrance.
•  Smoking is not permitted in any area of the Museum.
•  Telephones are located on First Floor.
•  Visitor Services Information is located at the First Floor.
•  Video and still photography are permitted throughout the permanent collections of the Museum and Research Institute using existing light only. No photography of any kind is permitted in the Rugs gallery. No commercial photography is permitted. No camera stands are permitte.
•  Tea House is located on first level.

Main entrance Great Russell Street
There is a lift to the left of the forecourt stairs up to the main entrance,

From the main entrance there is level access to most of the ground floor galleries and facilities. The public restaurant and café may be reached by twelve steps up from room 12, or by the staff lift opposite the public lavatories.

Access to the upper floors from the main entrance is by stairs or the staff lift in room 6, next to the special exhibition gallery.

Montague Place/ North entrance
The north lift, from the Montague Place entrance, has been widened for easier wheelchair entry, and allows access to the Prints and Drawings and Japanese temporary exhibitions galleries (rooms 90/92-94) and the Asian gallery (room 33). Level access from this section to the rest of the museum is on level 3 from room 66.Lift access to the Korean Gallery (room 67) is by the north lift to level 2, then via thestaff lift in room 33a A staff escort is available from the north entrance cloakroom.

Accessible lavatories are located on the ground floor near the public restaurant, room 12, or in room 6, the special exhibitions gallery.

Limited Parking for disabled users only is available in the Museum's forecourt. This can be arranged by telephoning the Information Desk on 0207 323 8299; Please have your vehicle details ready

Guide and companion dogs are welcome. Dog bowls are available from the Information Desk.

Wheelchairs are available at both entrances, free of charge. A puncture repair kit is available from the Information Desk.

The First Aid room has level access and is on the ground floor, off room 12.

Large print versions of the Information and Plans Leaflets and selected gallery guides are available from the Information Desk and the Education Department.

A sound enhancement system with portable induction loops is available for most gallery talks and to support sign-interpreted tours.

Sign-interpreted talks are an ongoing programme and details are available in the Events leaflet, from the Information Desk and the Education Department.

A sound-guide system for the Parthenon Galleries is available in room 18, which includes a touch section for all visitors, the Tiresias Project.

Touch tours of the Roman sculpture galleries (rooms 83-85) and the Egyptian sculpture gallery (room 4) are available from the Information Desk for visually impaired visitors, with tape and large print guides. Sculptures which may be touched are marked with Braille labels.

Magnifying glasses may be loaned for a £5 deposit from the Information Desk.

Railway:
Charing Cross Station
Underground:
Charing Cross (Northern and Bakerloo Lines) and Leicester Square (Northern and Piccadilly Lines) are closest to the Gallery.
Embankment (Northern, Bakerloo, District and Circle Lines) and Piccadilly Circus (Bakerloo and Piccadilly lines) are slightly further away.
None of these stations have lifts.
Bus:
Buses on the National Gallery pavement: 3, 12, 24, 29, 53, 88, 159, 176.
Around Trafalgar Square: 6, 9, 11, 13, 15, 23, x53, 77a, 91, 109, 139.
(NB 3, 88 and 139 are adapted to take wheelchairs.)
Car:
Nearest public car park is in Whitcomb Street and also some limited on-street parking nearby.
Visitors with a Blue, Orange or White disabled parking badge can book a parking space at the rear of the National Gallery, close to the Education Centre Entrance in Orange Street. To book telephone the Duty Manager on 020 7747 2854.

Location and Hours
The National Gallery of Art and its Sculpture Garden, located on the National Mall between Third and Ninth Streets at Constitution Avenue, NW, are open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Gallery is closed on December 25 and January 1.

Museum Policies
For the protection of the works of art and our visitors, the following policies currently apply when you visit the National Gallery of Art:

  • Visitors will be asked to present all bags for inspection as they enter the Gallery.

  • All daypacks, backpacks, large bags, packages, and umbrellas must be left in one of the checkrooms, provided free of charge at each entrance.

  • Luggage or garment bags will not be permitted in either building and may not be checked.

  • Laptop computers, cameras, fur coats, and other items of value may not be checked, but may be carried into the galleries. Visitors with laptop computers will be asked to complete a temporary pass authorization form.

  • Children may not be carried on the shoulders of another person or in a backpack child carrier. Strollers are available free of charge near each checkroom.

  • Food and beverages are not allowed outside the food service areas.

  • Cell phones may not be used in the galleries.

  • Photography for personal use is permitted except in special exhibitions and where specifically prohibited

We appreciate your cooperation.

Public Transportation
The nearest Metro stops are Judiciary Square on the Red Line, Archives on the Yellow/Green Lines, and Smithsonian on the Blue/Orange Lines. Metro bus stops are located on 4th Street and 7th Street.

Further information about Metrobus and Metrorail routes and schedules is available at the Washington Metropoliton Transit Authority Web site. The WMATA RideGuide Web site provides a fast and easy way to plan your visit to the Gallery.

Taxicabs are easily hailed in most areas of the city and often wait for Gallery patrons between the East and West Buildings on 4th Street.

Parking and Accessibility
Public parking is limited to the surrounding streets and commercial garages. Parking areas, ramps, and elevators provide access to public areas and galleries for visitors with disabilities at the East Building entrance on 4th Street and the West Building entrance on Constitution Avenue at 6th Street.

Entrances
The East and West Buildings are connected by an underground concourse with a moving walkway. Entrances to the West Building are on the Mall, on Constitution Avenue at 6th Street and on 4th Street. The entrance to the East Building is on 4th Street. There are 6 public entrances to the Sculpture Garden: one entrance on Constitution Avenue at 9th Street, N.W.; three entrances on 7th Street, N.W.; one directly across from the Gallery's West Building entrance; and two entrances on the National Mall between 7th and 9th Streets, N.W.
